Are you considering purchasing a Subaru Forester? If you’re going the new or used route, it’s important to know what common issues to be aware of before you do. As with any car, there are going to be common problems that are reported by drivers, and the Forester is no exception.
As you’re considering the pros and cons of purchasing a Forester, be sure to pay attention to these commonly reported Subaru Forester problems. While these may not be related to the more recent models, these issues are important to note if you are interested in an older used model. Check out our list of Subaru Forester issues below.
Engine Issues
There are a variety of issues that owners have reported that are related to the Check Engine light being illuminated. When it comes to Forester engine issues, one of the most common complaints is related to the oxygen sensor. Due to a crack in the oxygen sensor (the cause of the Check Engine light illuminating), the sensor fails and in some cases was recalled by Subaru.
There are also issues in catalytic converter efficiency that cause the Check Engine light to illuminate. This issue can also cause the Subaru Forester to fail a smog test, so if you are located in an area or state that requires them, that is something to be aware of.
Another sensor that can sometimes fail is the knock sensor. Interestingly enough, this test will only intermittently fail, so while your Check Engine light may turn on, it doesn’t always mean that the knock sensor will show any issues when tested. Luckily, this has not been known to be an issue in models after 2010.
Transmission Problems
Subaru Forester transmission problems typically occur in two ways – shuddering or jerking. Some drivers notice the jerking when shifting gears. Other drivers feel the shuddering when driving uphill. In both cases, it appears that an update to the car’s software did not resolve the issue.
Oil Consumption
When it comes to Subaru Forester common problems, one of the most commonly reported is related to the car’s oil consumption. Many drivers have reported that they need to get their oil changed more frequently than they have had to in other cars. This is likely due to oil cracks or leaks in the camshaft and crankshaft seals as well as the oil pump seal.
Electrical Issues
While many of the issues above may not fall onto the list of 2020 Subaru Forester problems, one thing that has been reported in more recent models is electrical issues. These issues span from not being able to open the tailgate to issues with the car’s GPS system. While these issues may cause an inconvenience, they do not render the car inoperable.
Now that you are familiar with some of the most commonly reported Subaru Forester issues, you can know what to look for as you conduct your vehicle search. While these issues aren’t deal breakers by any means, just be sure that you pay close attention to the engine and transmission before you purchase.
