Auto AC Repair in Salt Lake City

Back in the day, all vehicle air conditioning systems used R12 refrigerant, also known as “Freon.” Then they came out with a new refrigerant, R134A, that would be easier on the ozone layer. Well, beginning in 2013, GM started installing R1234YF in their A/C systems that would be even easier on the ozone layer and overall more “eco-friendly.”

Then in 2017, Chrysler, Honda, and Subaru began using R1234YF. Now in 2021, all new cars and trucks must be equipped with the new R1234YF refrigerant. It works well and it is more environmentally friendly, but it does cost a lot more. It also takes special equipment to service the A/C systems that use the new refrigerant.

The good news is, GT Automotive has all of the equipment and refrigerant needed to address all of your auto AC repair needs, no matter when your car was built! So if your A/C isn’t getting as cold as it used to, bring it on in and we’ll have a look at it for you.

How Do I Know If My Vehicle Needs Auto Air Conditioning Repair?

No matter the vehicle make, the signs of a quickly deteriorating auto air conditioning system are universal. There are indicators that tell us when there is an issue with your car’s air conditioning and you will need an air conditioning evac or recharge service before the problem worsens. Below are some signs that your vehicle may need AC car repair:

  • Air conditioning blowing hot air – One of the most common signs that your car’s AC system isn’t working properly is that it is only blowing warm air out of its vents, even though you have it set to cool. When your air conditioning loses its ability to cool, there is likely a low level of refrigerant, your condenser may be broken, or the compressor has a broken or damaged belt.
  • Strange noises when AC is turned on – If your car is still blowing cold air sporadically and not yet blowing only warm air, the next warning sign is weird noises when trying to run the AC. Noise usually comes from a dying compressor or other common causes such as a contaminated refrigerant or the use of the wrong lubricant. Addressing this matter quickly will help prevent other issues that may be more severe and costly to fix.
  • Weird smells – If a bad odor is being released when you turn on your air conditioning, this is a sign that it is having issues. Bacteria and fungus can form in the AC system, producing a foul smell if used infrequently.
  • Leaks – Another common warning sign of a faulty AC is when it is leaking. Low pressure in your AC unit can be a sign of an impending leak, as well as coolant draining around your vehicle. If you are experiencing this, it may not seem like there is anything wrong since the AC might still blow cold air, but this is a sign that there may be an issue that can develop into a larger issue if not addressed.
