Most Common Kia Sorento Problems

If you’re in the market for a reliable mid-size SUV with a large amount of cargo space and a more reasonable price, then the Kia Sorento might be the right vehicle for you. While the Sorento does have a variety of great features, it’s important to note that, like all other cars, there are some known downsides to be aware of.

Before you move forward with your car purchase, be sure to check out our list of the most commonly reported Kia Sorento problems. It’s important to note that the issues listed below have affected a subset of drivers not all. Regardless, it’s still useful to know what to expect before making a big purchase decision. Read on to see the most common Kia Sorento issues.

Engine Failure

The first and most important thing to discuss is the commonly reported Kia Sorento engine problems. For models between 2011 and 2017, the Sorento’s engine was known for having some trouble, specifically a faulty head gasket. This led to antifreeze and coolant mixing with the engine oil, which resulted in significant engine damage.

Most drivers reported that this issue happened at around 55,000 to 77,000 miles, but it also happened later for some drivers. Drivers also reported having to pay between $4,600 and $6,500 to repair the issue. If you’re considering a model newer than the 2017, you should be in the clear regarding these engine issues. However, if you’re considering an older used model, be sure to keep an eye out on the engine and get your head gasket checked out/replaced regularly.

Transmission Problems

Another group of issues on the list to be aware of is the Kia Sorento transmission problems. Similarly to the engine issues, the issues with the transmission seem to be limited to earlier Sorento models, specifically the 2011 model. Some drivers reported significant jerking while shifting gears.

Depending on what is causing the issue with the transmission, there are some cases where a software update resolves the issue. However, this is typically only the case when the Check Engine light is incorrectly illuminated and is more likely to be effective in newer models.

Door Issues

An interesting issue on the list of Kia Sorento common problems is related to faulty doors. This issue is again focused on the 2011 model. With this model, drivers were finding that they couldn’t open their passenger doors due to failed exterior door handles. While this is a seemingly minor issue, it can certainly become a safety issue in certain situations.

Faulty A/C Compressor

Some drivers reported hearing noise or vibration from the A/C compressor. Sometimes this was more of a whining noise and in other cases it was more of a rumbling. Either way, it eventually resulted in the A/C not producing cold air.

Headlight Issues

The last item on the list of commonly reported Kia Sorento problems is related to the vehicle’s headlights. While this issue is more of a nuisance than a major concern, it is important to note that drivers report that the headlights in earlier models tend to burn out prematurely. If you do purchase an older model, be sure to check your headlights frequently and replace as needed.

Now that you know what the most common issues that Kia Sorento drivers face, you can make an informed purchase decision. If you’re looking for a model year that has fewer reported issues, be sure to look at the 2018 models and later.
