Most Common Toyota Avalon Problems

When you think about the top Toyota mid-size sedans, you probably first think of their Camry or Corolla. However, don’t forget about Toyota’s flagship sedan, the Toyota Avalon. The Avalon is often thought to be Toyota’s premium sedan with luxury features and more power. So if you are thinking about buying a new sedan, the Toyota Avalon is definitely one to consider. But like all cars, no model is perfect regardless of the company’s stellar reputation. That said, before you invest in a Toyota Avalon, knowing the most common Toyota Avalon problems will help you make the most informed decision possible.

Top Reported Toyota Avalon Issues

1. Bad Steering Rack

Toyota Avalon steering rack problems were amongst the most reported Toyota Avalon problems. Users detailed that they experienced one or more of the following symptoms – which was later determined to be related to a bad steering rack.

  • Power steering fluid leaks
  • Screeching/clunking noise when you turn the steering wheel
  • An increase in difficulty when steering at low speeds or an abnormally loose feeling when turning the steering wheel

Although the power steering system in most cars tends to last well over 100,000 miles before failures occur, they can go out much sooner if not maintained properly. If your vehicle is experiencing the symptoms above, you may need a Toyota Avalon rack and pinion replacement  – which can cost upwards of $1,500 depending on the vehicle’s unique needs and the mechanic shop you take it to.

2. Airbag Malfunction

One of the more serious Toyota Avalon problems on the list revolves around the airbag system.  A notable number of owners reported that their Avalon’s airbags failed to deploy when needed. Several owners that were involved in crashes mentioned that they sustained serious injuries due to the airbag’s failure. Some of the causes/symptoms of airbag-related issues are the following:

  • Faulty Sensor: If you notice that your airbag light is turning on and off intermittently, be sure to contact your dealer or mechanic ASAP and have them check and/or reset the system to ensure it is functioning properly.
  • Old Car Battery: If your car has an old or bad battery that is weak or depleted, it could affect the efficiency of your airbag sensors. If you think this might be the case, be sure to recharge the backup battery or replace the battery to avoid any further issues.
  • Prior Deployment: Like most things, airbags can wear out, which can negatively affect how it functions during a collision. This is why experts recommend replacing your car’s airbag once it has been deployed.
  • Clock Spring Failure: Airbags are often connected to a component known as the clock spring. An old or worn clock spring can sometimes lead to the warning light coming on abruptly.

3. Faulty Alternator

Toyota Avalon alternator problems were also commonly reported by owners. The main symptoms that were experienced were the following:

  • Engine stalling out at odd times or car not starting altogether
  • Electrical issues causing normal power functions to malfunction
  • Hearing unusual (often loud) sounds

The most common remedy to this Toyota Avalon issue is to get an alternator replacement. Alternator replacement can cost upwards of $700 depending on which shop you take it into.

4. Acceleration Issues

Often thought as the worst Toyota Avalon problem to arise over the years revolves around speed control. Although most reports simply detailed that their Avalon would accelerate out of control at random times, some reports went into more specifics. Below were some of the most common issues that owners experienced.

  • The cruise control system would randomly slam the brakes resulting in the vehicle jolting forward to get back to the previously set speed.
  • The accelerator would seemingly get stuck from time to time causing a delay in deceleration
  • The car would suddenly begin to accelerate although trying to drive at a lower speed

Although there are many things that could cause this issue, the main things to look out for are a damaged mass airflow or oxygen sensor, a faulty catalytic converter, debris-infested fuel system, or a misaligned timing belt. Given the danger involved with having a malfunctioning acceleration system, if you think your vehicle may have an acceleration issue, be sure to take it into the shop as soon as possible.

5. Air Conditioner Problems

Although it might not be as serious as the issues discussed above, another common Toyota Avalon problem revolves around the air conditioning system. The cause of these Toyota Avalon air conditioner problems can be a number of things ranging from something as simple as a dirty cabin air filter or clogged condenser to something more serious like a bad blower motor or faulty AC compressor. Regardless, most solutions are relatively easy for a mechanic to implement. If you know your way around your vehicle, you may also be able to implement some of these solutions on your own at home.
